The Time Cardboard Saved my Truck

One of my favorite things to do in the winter is to go hunting.  I am not the best hunter and sometimes I am always amazed when I am successful.  But the truth is that it is really fun to do and super useful.  One thing to know about this story is that I live in the midwest of the United States of America.  This presents me with a different style of terrain than lots of the country.  It also creates a different style of hunting than lots of other sections of the country.  Here I am forced to deal with lots of open fields or dense sections of woods.

Our side of the country is unique because it provides two drastically different terrains.  This also creates the need for two different styles of hunting or a combination depending on your location.  As for myself, the property that I hunt on is a mix of both open fields and dense woods.  This makes things more interesting and sometimes takes more skill to be successful in. But I prefer to deer hunt on the property which allows me to feed my family for a very low cost for a very long time each year.  Deer meat can be used in a multitude of dishes and is very healthy to consume.  Due to my situation, I have found the use of cardboard boxes to be paramount in the use of hunting.  I know it is incredibly shocking, but I collect the cardboard before each hunting season for a few specific purposes, and one year it really came in handy.

So we all know that Inevitably when deer hunting it will end up being a bloody mess.  It is simply part of hunting and there is no getting around that it can be messy at times. I have found that taking cardboard boxes and lining my truck bed has been a lifesaver for cleaning.  Being able to use a free liner to keep my truck from getting blood and sometimes leftover guts s a great time saver for me.  It is easy to take a knife and cut several boxes to the shape of the truck bed.  It doesn’t cost me anything to collect the boxes and it takes less than 10 minutes to cut it so the bed and the side of the truck bed are covered. Now when I get the deer back to my truck I am able to drag it up and toss it on the cardboard which soaks up all the mess.

Now it is pretty gross but so much better when I get home and get the deer out I only have to throw the cardboard away.  This saves hours of spraying out the truck bed and then cleaning it with disinfectant.  That always ends up making the truck smell for weeks of cleaning supplies and that is not pleasant. So next time you hunt cut up a box and it may save you a lot of time in the long run.  I have also borrowed my dad's truck and this was a great way to insure that I was not disowned as a son after I was done! So use what you have and be wise when hunting and make sure to keep a few boxes to save yourself in the end.
